Below is a possible solution to the 9-dot puzzle posed in the article It Makes You Think, Vol. 25 No. 2

Step 1

9 pink dots arranged evenly in 3 rows of 3, forming a notional square, with a red arrow extending horizontally to the right from the top centre dot for a distance beyond the right-hand column of dots equal to the distance between dots

 

Step 2

9 pink dots arranged evenly in 3 rows of 3, forming a notional square, with a red arrow extending horizontally to the right from the top centre dot for a distance beyond the right-hand column of dots equal to the distance between dots, then turning through a 135-degree right turn through the middle right and middle bottom dots, to end immediately below the left-hand column of dots.

 

Step 3

9 pink dots arranged evenly in 3 rows of 3, forming a notional square, with a red arrow extending horizontally to the right from the top centre dot for a distance beyond the right-hand column of dots equal to the distance between dots, then turning through a 135-degree right turn through the middle right and middle bottom dots, to a point immediately below the left-hand column of dots, then another 135-degree right turn to end on the top-left dot.

 

Step 4

9 pink dots arranged evenly in 3 rows of 3, forming a notional square, with a red arrow extending horizontally to the right from the top centre dot for a distance beyond the right-hand column of dots equal to the distance between dots, then turning through a 135-degree right turn through the middle right and middle bottom dots, to a point immediately below the left-hand column of dots, then another 135-degree right turn to the top-left dot, then a final 135-degree right-hand turn to finish on the bottom-right dot.
